Morphing Rig

Biped Rig, capable of changing gender, bodyshape, height and facial look.

The rig is intended to be a prototype of a morphing rig procedural rigging system. So the rig does not use any blendshapes/ cluster deformer to achieve the final effects. All the morphing features are keyable as well, which means the rig is able to morph on-fly.

The rigging process is very complicated.

Skin Weights

One of the most tricky parts is assigning skin weights. There are lots of overlapping morphing components. For example, some vertices needs to be able to scale with chest, stretch with spine, morph with belly, etc. Thus, tons of joints are placed to influence same vertices, which makes each joint only assigned with a very small weight value. So I have to paint the skin weights very carefully.

Another way is to assign skin weights by scripts. I used skinPercent command a lot when the deformation is very geometrical(be able to be expressed as an expression). Also, when two morphing components overlap, I sometimes use left body to paint for one skin weight and right body to do the other. In this way, I can see what skin weights are supposed to be. Then, I use python command to query for skin weights on right and left side to calculate the proper skin weight for those overlapped parts.

Morphing and Animation components

Another thing is to integrate morphing and animation components onto the same mesh. My first attempt is to use a blendshape deformer to add the morphing component directly to the base (animation) mesh. But it did not work. Then I have to work on the joints of the original skincluster deformer to make the final morphing effects. Therefore, the rig involves lots of careful design for transform node hierarchy and pivots positions.
